Nate Schmidt, an assistant coach with the Iowa State University men's basketball program, has been chosen to attend the 2026 TopConnect Basketball Symposium, an invitation‑only gathering that brings together emerging leaders from across the college game. The selection marks the third time a Big 12 representative has been named to the 39‑person cohort, underscoring Schmidt’s growing influence within the conference.
The Symposium at UNLV
The symposium convened on June 8 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and was presented by Just Play Sports. Over the course of the day, 50 rising coaches and administrators took part in a packed schedule of educational sessions, leadership presentations and the signature TopConnect speed‑dating format, all designed to foster professional growth and networking.
Dr. Richard Sander, director of TopConnect, emphasized the event’s role in connecting and preparing the next generation of basketball leaders. “Our programming tackles the most pressing challenges in college athletics — from hiring strategies to fundraising — while giving participants a rare chance to learn from peers and industry veterans,” he said.
A Proven Record of Impact
Schmidt enters his fourth season as an assistant on Dan McMahon’s staff and his eighth year overall with the Cyclones. During that span the program has compiled a 124‑103 record, earned five NCAA Tournament berths in five seasons and established itself as a consistent contender in the Big 12.
His recognition extends beyond this symposium; earlier this year Schmidt earned a spot on the Silver Waves Elite 75 Future Head Coach Power Lunch and appeared on the Silver Waves 100 Most Impactful Men’s High‑Major Assistants list for 2026. Those honors reflect a career built on strategic insight, player development and a commitment to excellence that aligns with the symposium’s mission.
