Luca Fantilli, a standout defenseman who spent four seasons with the Michigan Wolverines, has officially signed a one-year, one-way contract with the Charlotte Checkers, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Florida Panthers.
A Michigan Journey
During his senior year Fantilli averaged 19:32 minutes of ice time, ranking third among Michigan’s defensemen, and formed a reliable pairing with senior partner Tyler Duke. Together they limited the production of top opponents, including Penn State star Gavin McKenna, and helped the team shut down high-scoring lines.
Offensively, Fantilli reached a career-high 17 points, adding four goals — one of which came in the Big Ten Tournament final against Ohio State — and contributed 13 assists throughout the season.
Legacy and Brotherly Influence
The signing marks the culmination of a family legacy, as Fantilli follows his younger brother Adam Fantilli, a Hobey Baker Award winner, into professional hockey. He is also the final senior from a graduating class that includes former forwards T.J. Hughes, Josh Eernisse, Kienan Draper and defense partner Tyler Duke.
Teammates and coaches have repeatedly praised his upbeat demeanor, noting that his positivity and energy have been a constant source of morale in the locker room.
Transition to the AHL
Joining the Checkers provides Fantilli with a fresh environment to translate his defensive reliability and leadership into the professional game, where he will work under the Panthers’ development system.
Fans and analysts alike anticipate that his experience and work ethic will make an immediate impact, potentially shaping the Checkers’ blue line for the upcoming season.
