A New Era for Mason Basketball
George Mason University announced Tuesday that head coach Tony Skinn has agreed to a two‑year extension, keeping him at the helm through the 2031‑32 season.
The deal represents the third time in as many years that Skinn’s contract has been renewed, underscoring the administration’s confidence in his leadership.
Under Skinn’s guidance the Patriots have posted a 70‑31 record over three seasons, including three consecutive campaigns with at least 20 victories.
A George Mason alum, Skinn contributed 12.6 points per game as a member of the 2006 Final Four team before returning to coach his alma mater.
His first extension, signed in spring 2023, paid $925,000 annually with $25,000 yearly raises; the most recent agreement adds $100,000 per year, reaching a base of $1.7 million for the 2025‑26 season.
Skinn succeeded Kim English, whose two‑year tenure ended when he departed for Providence, a move that ultimately led to his dismissal after a single winning season.
English now serves on the staff of Michael Malone, the newly appointed UNC coach who captured an NBA championship with the Denver Nuggets in 2023.
Marvin Lewis, the university’s athletics director, praised Skinn for raising the program’s competitive standard and fostering a culture of accountability and player development.
In a statement, Skinn expressed gratitude to the fans and university leadership for their continued investment, emphasizing his excitement to compete at the national level.
Looking Ahead
With the contract secured, Mason aims to build on its recent success and pursue deeper runs in the NCAA tournament, leveraging Skinn’s recruiting acumen and player‑development philosophy.
