Purdue Secures First 2027 Defensive Commitment as Gianni Porfilio Chooses Boilermakers

California defensive back picks Purdue over West Coast offers, expanding the program's footprint

Purdue football has landed its first defensive commitment for the 2027 recruiting class, securing the pledge of three‑star defensive back Gianni Porfilio from Huntington Beach, California.

Porfilio, ranked No. 1,222 nationally by Rivals, chose the Boilermakers over a series of West Coast programs including Arizona, Washington State, Oregon State and others, announcing his decision on Tuesday.

During his senior season at Mount Miguel High School, he tallied 22 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles on defense while also contributing 86 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions as a receiver.

The commitment adds to a growing list of 2027 prospects for Purdue, where three offensive players had already pledged to the class before Porfilio’s arrival.

A Boost for Purdue’s Defensive Outlook

Porfilio’s arrival follows the earlier commitment of 2026 freshman quarterback Corin Berry from Covina, California, further cementing the program’s expanding footprint in the state.

The Boilermakers’ 2026 signing class already featured a heavy emphasis on defensive backs, with six of the 25 high‑school or junior‑college signees coming from the secondary, a trend that the new pledge is expected to continue.

Coaches and analysts view the addition as a strategic reinforcement of Purdue’s secondary as the program seeks to compete more aggressively for top talent across the country.
