Four-Star Defensive Lineman Kasi Currie Commits to Texas Over Powerhouse Programs

The Chatsworth native chose the Longhorns after weighing offers from Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State, becoming the first 2027 defensive line commit.

Four-star defensive lineman Kasi Currie announced his commitment to the University of Texas on Tuesday, selecting the Longhorns over a slate of suitors that included Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State.

The Rankings Behind the Commitment

Ranked as the No. 5 defensive lineman and the No. 62 overall prospect nationally, Currie brings a blend of size and athleticism that has been highlighted by 247Sports analyst Andrew Ivins, who described him as having a "squatty lower half" and being "violent with the hands and quick to shoot them".

During his senior season at Chatsworth High in California he recorded 33 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, a pass breakup and an interception, numbers that helped cement his status as a top-tier prospect.

The recruitment process saw Currie tour several campuses, including an official visit to Texas that concluded less than a week before his pledge, while earlier trips to Georgia, Oregon and Ohio State had kept the competition fierce.

Georgia extended a scholarship in January 2026 and hosted him for a spring game, Oregon had offered in January 2025 and arranged multiple unofficial visits, and Ohio State followed suit in September 2025 with an unofficial visit in April. Each program emphasized a different narrative, but Texas managed to tip the scales.

The commitment also reflects a broader trend in the 2027 class, where Oregon has already secured two four-star defensive linemen, while Ohio State continues to chase its first defensive-line pledge despite already landing five-star DJ Jacobs and four-star Wyatt Smith.

Scouting platforms such as Rivals and 247Sports have been instrumental in shaping the conversation, providing the metrics and analysis that underpin the rankings and the narrative surrounding each recruit.
