Kevin Schnall Takes the Helm of South Carolina Baseball

A $7 million hire brings new ambition to a program seeking a return to the College World Series

A Grand Welcome at Founders Park

The University of South Carolina staged a high‑profile welcome for its newly appointed baseball head coach Kevin Schnall, drawing a crowd to Founders Park on a Wednesday evening.

The ceremony, held at 8:30 p.m. under the lights of Ray Tanner Field, offered free admission, t‑shirts bearing the slogan “Schnall Ball,” and complimentary concessions that included hot dogs, popcorn, pretzels, candy, soda and bottled water.

Schnall arrived by helicopter, landing on the field before receiving a jersey from athletics director Jeremiah Donati, who introduced the coach to fans and declared the hire “the guy.”

Schnall’s Vision and Contract

In his remarks, Schnall said, “Carolina embodies everything great about college baseball,” and expressed excitement about taking over a program that posted the most losses in school history in 2026 and has not appeared in the NCAA Tournament since 2024.

The coach, who spent the previous two years leading Coastal Carolina to back‑to‑back NCAA Tournament appearances and a College World Series run in 2025, signed a five‑year, $7 million contract that guarantees a $1.3 million base salary in his first season, with additional incentives possible.

Donati emphasized Schnall’s track record, noting his stint as an assistant under former Chanticleer coach Gary Gilmore and his success at Coastal Carolina, and said the decision was clear.

The Gamecocks, who have missed the playoffs for the past two years and have not been to Omaha in 14 years, hope Schnall’s experience will restore competitiveness and return the team to the national stage.
