A rivalry forged in proximity
The rivalry between Boston University and Boston College is more than a schedule entry; it is a daily reality for the two schools that sit only a few miles apart along Commonwealth Avenue.
Over the decades the matchup has been called the Battle of Commonwealth Avenue, the Battle of Boston, or the B‑Line Rivalry, reflecting the deep‑rooted competition that dates back to 1949, when the teams first met on the ice.
The intensity grew in the 1970s under Jack Parker, who steered BU to three national titles, 13 Frozen Fours and a 1978 championship victory over BC, a 5‑3 win that remains a touchstone for the series.
A decade later Jerry York took the reins at BC, guiding the Eagles to four championships, nine Hockey East tournament crowns and a string of Beanpot triumphs; the Parker‑York era came to define a golden age of college hockey.
The most recent 2023‑24 season added another chapter: BC swept BU in a regular‑season series, captured the Hockey East tournament title, and both squads advanced to the Frozen Four before falling to Denver, yet the anticipation for the next encounter remains undiminished.
Beyond the scores, the rivalry fuels a spirited exchange among players, coaches and fans, with alumni like Jack O’Callahan, Ryan Shannon, Will Smith and Matt Davis recalling the passion that still reverberates through the campuses and the city.
