Willamette University is set to host a youth girls basketball camp in Salem from June 22 through June 24, offering a focused training experience for children entering kindergarten through ninth grade.
Camp Schedule and Structure
Fifth‑ through ninth‑graders will gather each morning from 9 a.m. to noon, while kindergarten through fourth‑grade participants will attend the afternoon session from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The staggered schedule allows age‑appropriate instruction and ensures that each group receives training tailored to their developmental stage.
The three‑day program emphasizes fundamentals, skill development and team building, with drills designed to improve shooting, passing, defense and court awareness. Current Willamette players will assist the coaches, providing mentorship and real‑time feedback.
Head coach Peg Swadener and associate head coach Grace Barry will oversee the camp, bringing their collegiate expertise to guide the young athletes. Their combined experience includes years of youth instruction and community outreach, creating an environment that balances competition with personal growth.
Financial Support and Community Impact
A 50% scholarship is available for families who qualify for SNAP, TANF or housing assistance through the State of Oregon, making the camp accessible to a broader segment of the community. Every participant will receive a complimentary T‑shirt, reinforcing a sense of belonging and team identity.
