A Season of Recognition
Cooper Abernathy of Lindsay Lane was crowned Class 2A Hitter of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, capping a season in which he batted .424 with a .532 on‑base percentage and a 1.060 OPS.
The accolade reflects not only his .424 average but also his 50 RBIs, 53 hits, 13 doubles, three stolen bases and 22 walks, numbers that placed him tied for the lead in RBIs with Ariton’s Easton Kilpatrick.
Lindsay Lane coach Charles Morrison lauded Abernathy for his dual excellence behind the plate and at the plate, noting that the player’s poise under pressure set a standard for the team.
Other local standouts also earned first‑team honors, with Athens Bible’s Luke Murrell and Lindsay Lane’s Wyatt Wallace joining Abernathy on the elite list.
Additional area players such as Chandler James of Athens Bible, Grayson Borden of Clements, Brodie Coker of East Limestone, Lane Jones and Maddox Ruble of Lindsay Lane, Colt Pressnell of West Limestone, as well as Hudson Marks of Athens, Chris Fitts of East Limestone and Lincoln Doner of Elkmont received second‑team recognition.
The All‑State team is selected annually by the ASWA’s prep committee, which evaluates athletes across seven classifications within the Alabama High School Athletic Association, while the Alabama Independent School Association also participates in the yearly selection process.
