Chris Lemonis, the architect of Mississippi State’s first national baseball championship in 2021, was announced Thursday as the new head coach of Coastal Carolina University. The hiring marks a homecoming for a coach who grew up just a short drive from the campus and who already knows the region’s baseball culture intimately.
A Homecoming for a Proven Winner
A 1998 graduate of Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, Lemonis returns to the Palmetto State after a decade at Mississippi State, where he guided the Bulldogs to a historic title and built a reputation for player development. His wife, Jill, is a Coastal Carolina alumna, underscoring the family’s deep ties to the university community.
Chance Miller, vice president for intercollegiate athletics at CCU, praised Lemonis’s track record, saying the program “has found a leader who not only understands the local landscape but also possesses the winning pedigree to take the Chanticleers to new heights.”
The Chanticleers have a storied history, having captured the College World Series title in 2016 and finishing as runners‑up in 2025. Lemonis inherits a program that has consistently competed at the highest level and will look to build on that momentum.
The move also coincides with a recent shuffle in the coaching carousel, as former CCU head coach Kevin Schnall was hired earlier this week to lead the University of South Carolina’s baseball program, further reshaping the regional landscape.
