Coach Tarek Abdelsameia Earns AA Degree in History, Eyes Future in Education and Coaching

After overcoming personal hardships and a distinguished high school basketball career, Abdelsameia celebrates academic achievement and plans further study.

A Path Forged by Perseverance

Tarek Abdelsameia, a veteran basketball coach whose name has become synonymous with youth development in the Los Angeles area, recently celebrated a personal milestone that bridges his two passions: he earned an Associate of Arts degree in history, complete with a teaching credential.

The achievement comes after a decade spent leading teams at Grant High School in Woodland Hills, where he guided squads to two CIF LA City Section Division I championships and mentored dozens of student‑athletes.

Beyond the hardwood, Abdelsameia’s life has been marked by resilience. He lost his mother at a young age, forcing him to fend for himself, and later balanced coaching with part‑time work at Bally Total Fitness and a role in the IT department of a logistics firm to make ends meet.

The COVID‑19 pandemic, which paused games and practices, unexpectedly opened a window of time that allowed him to enroll in online courses. He used that period to pursue his long‑standing ambition of formal historical study.

Now, with his AA in hand, Abdelsameia plans to continue his education, aiming for a Bachelor of Arts in history, a teaching credential, and eventually a Master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration. He cites his mentor, Howard Levine, as a constant source of inspiration to impact lives through sport and scholarship.

Family remains central to his story. He is the proud father of three children — Elijah, Isla‑Kanayri, and Avery — who each bring their own unique challenges and joys. Avery, who has high‑functioning autism, is a polyglot fluent in Spanish and Russian, a fact that underscores the family’s commitment to learning.

His academic aspirations have led him to consider several institutions, including Pierce College, Los Angeles Valley College, Cal State Fullerton, Azusa Pacific University, and Pacifica Christian School, each offering pathways that align with his goals.

Reflecting on his journey, Abdelsameia says the convergence of coaching, education, and personal perseverance illustrates a broader narrative of finding purpose amid adversity, a message he hopes will resonate with other young athletes facing similar obstacles.
