On June 27, the Albuquerque Professional Baseball Hall of Fame will honor two pivotal figures in the city’s baseball narrative: Wesley Branch Rickey and Lorenzo Bundy.
A legacy of leadership
Wesley Branch Rickey, scion of a baseball dynasty, spent more than two decades at the helm of the Pacific Coast League, where he championed the construction of ten state‑of‑the‑art ballparks. His vision extended beyond the league, as he approved the move of the Calgary Cannons to Albuquerque and helped position the city as a hub for national baseball tournaments.
During his tenure, Rickey’s family legacy intertwined with a broader story of integration; his grandfather, Wesley Branch Rickey, played a decisive role in breaking baseball’s color barrier in 1947. The induction acknowledges not only his administrative feats but also the lineage that shaped his approach to the game.
Lorenzo Bundy, who guided the Albuquerque Isotopes from 2011 to 2013, compiled a 226‑win record and earned PCL Manager of the Year honors in 2012 after steering the club to an 80‑win season and a division championship. His on‑field success cemented his place among the city’s most respected managers.
The ceremony will also recognize other legends such as Tommy Lasorda, Del Crandall, Ted Power, Orel Hershiser and Pedro Guerrero, underscoring the rich tapestry of talent that has emerged from Albuquerque’s baseball community.
Beyond individual accolades, the Hall of Fame serves as a reminder of the sport’s enduring impact on the city’s cultural identity, linking past pioneers with the next generation of enthusiasts.
