Tennessee football has secured a commitment from four-star linebacker Kenneth Simon II for the 2027 class, a recruitment that took a surprising turn when the Brentwood Academy standout flipped his verbal pledge from Alabama to the Vols.
Ranked No. 139 nationally and the sixth-best prospect from Tennessee, Simon brings a rare blend of size, speed and football IQ that has drawn attention from SEC programs across the board.
The son of former UT defender Kevin Simon, who earned two All-SEC honors and a seventh-round NFL draft selection, Simon grew up watching Vols games from the sidelines and now hopes to continue a family tradition in Knoxville.
Andrew Ivins, 247 director of scouting, described Simon as a modern 3-4 linebacker whose athleticism, physicality and awareness allow him to rush the passer, drop into coverage and make decisive plays against the run.
After beginning his prep career as a safety at Bearden High School in Knoxville, Simon transferred to Brentwood Academy, where he helped the team capture a Tennessee Division II-AA championship before emerging as one of the state’s most versatile defenders.
Family Legacy Meets a New Era
The commitment is more than a recruiting win; it signals a cultural shift for Tennessee’s defense, which has historically leaned on traditional 4-3 schemes but is now embracing hybrid players capable of thriving in multiple roles.
Coaches envision Simon as a three-down player who can line up over the edge, slide inside against the run and cover tight ends in passing situations, giving the Vols a flexibility rarely seen in the SEC.
The recruitment also underscores the growing competitiveness of Tennessee’s in-state talent pipeline, as the Vols continue to fend off powerhouse programs from the Deep South while retaining some of the state’s most coveted prospects.
What This Means for the 2027 Class
Simon’s pledge not only bolsters the Vols’ defensive recruiting class but also sets a precedent for other top in-state athletes who may be weighing SEC options, showing that loyalty to home can outweigh the allure of historic powerhouses.
Recruiting analysts expect his addition to elevate Tennessee’s 2027 ranking, potentially moving the class into the top 20 nationally, while also providing a blueprint for how versatile defenders can impact the program’s defensive identity.
