Grand Canyon University announced this week that veteran coach Steve Bieser has strengthened his baseball staff by bringing on Travis Fitta as the program’s new hitting coach and Jack Wilson as the director of player development.
A Strategic Boost for the Lopes
Fitta arrives after a stint with the Washington Nationals organization, where he served as a Triple‑A hitting coach in 2026 and previously contributed to player development at Driveline Baseball and Ascent Athlete, sites known for producing multiple MLB Draft selections.
Wilson, a 12‑year Major League Baseball veteran who suited up for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and Atlanta Braves, returns to GCU after a season as an assistant coach and a tenure managing the Greeneville Flyboys in the Appalachian League. His induction into the Pirates Hall of Fame earlier this year underscores a career that also includes guiding his son, Jacob Wilson, to a 2025 MLB All‑Star selection.
Bieser, who was recruited after guiding Jacksonville State to a top‑25 ranking and multiple conference championships, emphasized that both Fitta and Wilson embody the professional experience and player‑centric philosophy he seeks to embed in the Lopes program.
The additions are expected to accelerate the development of current recruits and to reinforce the university’s ambition of competing at the highest level of collegiate baseball, a goal that aligns with the broader athletic strategy across the Phoenix metropolitan area.
