Rome Ewell, a 6‑foot‑2, 220‑pound linebacker from Springtown, Texas, announced his decision to join the Arizona Wildcats after previously pledging to the Houston Cougars. The announcement comes as part of a broader recruiting shuffle that has seen the prospect evaluate more than a dozen programs before landing in Tucson.
A Recruit's Journey
Ewell's football résumé includes 148 tackles and 13 tackles for loss as a junior, complemented by 65 tackles and four TFLs as a sophomore. He also recovered a fumble in each of those seasons and forced a turnover as a sophomore. Beyond the gridiron, he competes in track and field, specializing in the 100‑meter and 200‑meter dashes as well as the long jump.
The Texas native held 22 reported scholarship offers, among them notable programs such as Arizona State, Boston College, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisville, Memphis, Michigan State, Texas State and Wisconsin. Ultimately, he selected Arizona over the full list of contenders, a decision that aligns with his rating as the No. 95 linebacker and No. 148 player in the state according to 247Sports.
Internally, 247Sports ranks Ewell as the 1,051st prospect nationally, the 92nd linebacker, and the 138th overall player in Texas within its Composite scoring system. He becomes the eighth Texas‑born athlete in the 2027 class and the second linebacker commit, joining fellow three‑star Davon Smith.
Ewell's commitment adds depth to Arizona's defensive recruiting class and underscores the Wildcats' ability to attract top talent from across the country. The coaching staff expressed enthusiasm about integrating his size, athleticism and track background into their scheme, noting that his versatility could prove valuable in multiple defensive packages.
