Hudsonville Unity Christian capped an undefeated campaign by defeating Bloomfield Hills Marian 2-0 in the Division 2 state final, completing a perfect 24-0 season and adding another chapter to a storied legacy.
The win extended the program’s record to 14 state championships and a 24-game postseason shutout streak, having outscored opponents 104-1 while allowing just a single goal all year.
Coach Randy Heethuis praised the defensive organization that limited Marian’s chances, highlighting goalkeeper Payton Barendsen’s crucial saves — including a pivotal stop of Nia Bordogna’s shot — that preserved the clean sheet.
Early in the match, sophomore forward Olivia Walters and freshman keeper Caitlyn Curtis set an aggressive tone, while Tessa Ponstein’s second-half goal provided a comfortable margin. The defense held Marian scoreless for the first 14 minutes of the second half, underscoring the tactical discipline that has defined their dominance.
The victory also marked individual milestones, such as Tessa Ponstein scoring in her third consecutive state final, and reinforced the program’s reputation as a powerhouse, a reputation bolstered by contributions from players ranging from Leah Nalichowski’s attacking thrusts to Marlie Moelker’s midfield stability.
