Monmouth University’s baseball squad delivered a commanding 14-4 victory over North Carolina A&T on Tuesday, snapping a six-inning scoring streak that left the Hawks soaring.
The team erupted for at least one run in each of the third through seventh frames, turning a modest early lead into a blowout that showcased both offensive firepower and aggressive base running.
A decisive seventh-inning onslaught
Back-to-back RBI doubles from Jimmy Bruno and Aidan Bretschneider stretched the lead to 8-4, and the Hawks added five more runs in the same frame. Colin Richter and Wyatt Hunt each delivered two-run singles, capping a five-run burst that sealed a 14-4 final score.
The offensive outburst was supported by a disciplined pitching performance. Ryan Mealy earned his fifth win of the season after 5.2 innings of work, while Kevin Opanel closed out the game with 1.1 hit-free innings and three strikeouts.
Base-stealing milestone
Monmouth’s aggressiveness on the bases proved decisive. The Hawks stole five bases, breaking the school record with their 103rd steal of the season. Wyatt Hunt’s steal in the sixth inning surpassed last year’s mark, underscoring the team’s emphasis on speed and pressure.
The win lifts Monmouth to 9-1 when they record five or more steals in a game and improves their overall record to 8-2 whenever Colin Richter scores multiple runs. Richter finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, extending his hot streak to 7-for-8 over the last two contests.
With the series shifting to a Friday afternoon matchup on May 15 at 1 p.m., the Hawks will look to carry the momentum forward as they aim to dominate the Coastal Athletic Association schedule.
