Gateway Football Suffers Spring Setback Against Lemon Bay

New coach Chris Strykowski sees glimpses of progress amid a 48-14 loss

The Gateway football team opened its spring game with a 48-14 loss to Lemon Bay, a result that underscored the challenges faced by first-year head coach Chris Strykowski.

Lemon Bay’s offense clicked early, with running back Hogan Winow breaking loose for 183 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Colton Davis added 121 passing yards and two scores.

Gateway answered with its first points on a 2-yard run by C.J. Hood, but the early lead never materialized as the visiting team pulled away.

A Culture in Transition

Strykowski emphasized that the defeat was less about the scoreboard and more about instilling a new culture after moving from a 2A program to the FHSAA’s 6A classification. He noted the need for patience as the offense finds its rhythm.

The coach highlighted the emergence of young talent, praising freshman guard Brayden Burke and receiver Aiden Gerardo for their energy, while noting that quarterback Ellis is still a work in progress but shows promise.

Looking ahead, Gateway will use the summer and fall to fine-tune details, hoping the spring experience will translate into a stronger season as an FHSAA Independent.
