The Broward County baseball scene is celebrating two standout performances that have earned national recognition. Gio Rojas of Stoneman Douglas and Nico Sabatino of St. Thomas Aquinas were recently named the 7A‑5A Pitcher and Player of the Year, respectively, after delivering dominant seasons that culminated in state championships.
A Season Defined by Dominance
Rojas finished the year with an 11‑1 record, a 0.58 ERA and 124 strikeouts while also hitting five home runs and driving in 25 runs when he wasn't on the mound. His coach, Todd Fitz‑Gerald, held him back until the championship game, where he threw six and two‑thirds shutout innings, allowing just one hit to secure the sixth consecutive title for the Eagles.
Sabatino, meanwhile, batted .512 with five homers and 26 RBI, and his clutch two‑run blast in a regional final helped Aquinas advance. The shortstop's all‑around production earned him the Player of the Year award and a commitment to play at Appalachian State.
Both players have attracted the eye of professional scouts, with Rojas projected as a top‑10 pick in the upcoming MLB Draft. Their achievements highlight the depth of talent in Broward high school baseball and reflect the strong programs at Stoneman Douglas, St. Thomas Aquinas and their rivals.
