A New York family has filed a lawsuit accusing Our Lady of Lourdes High School, the Archdiocese of New York and a former soccer coach of failing to provide adequate supervision that led to their teenage son being injured on the field. The complaint details an incident in which a teammate grabbed the boy and slammed him onto concrete, causing abrasions that required medical attention.
Negligence on the Field
According to the legal filing, the injury occurred during a high school athletic event where the coach was not present to monitor the players. The family alleges that the school neglected its duty to ensure a safe environment, allowing the aggressive play that resulted in the teen’s physical harm.
Coach's Handling of the Incident
After the incident, the coach reportedly ordered the injured student to turn his jersey inside out and benching him for the remainder of the game. The coach did not assess the boy’s injuries or inquire about his well‑being, instead focusing on an allegation that the teen had used a racial slur against a teammate.
Aftermath and Legal Claims
The coach was subsequently terminated by the school, a move the family says they did not request. Following the termination, the family faced hostility from teammates, parents and other coaches. The lawsuit advances a single claim of negligent supervision and seeks damages for physical injuries, emotional distress, psychological harm, humiliation, property damage and other monetary losses. Offit Kurman, the law firm representing the plaintiffs, emphasized that a child was hurt on school grounds during a time when proper supervision was required.
