A Community United by the Beautiful Game
Worcester’s downtown transformed into a lively arena as the city marked the FIFA World Cup with a street soccer festival, an outdoor art exhibition and a series of watch parties that drew supporters from across the region.
A large screen set up at Worcester Common Oval streamed the tournament’s opening fixtures, including the Qatar‑Switzerland clash, Morocco’s encounter with Brazil and Haiti’s match against Scotland, while fans sported jerseys in Brazil’s yellow, Morocco’s green, Haiti’s blue and Scotland’s tartan.
Marcelly Miranda, a Brazilian native living in the city, voiced confidence that her nation could lift the trophy but expressed doubt about a semifinal run, while Sam Brewer, who admits he grew up without a soccer background, described how the tournament has sparked a new personal interest. The exhibition, titled “Goals Beyond The Game,” features works by seven local artists of African descent, among them Ghanaian painter Ivana Lamptey, whose piece “Joy of the Future” portrays children playing with improvised equipment.
The celebration also included pickup games on closed‑off Franklin Street and a youth league tournament organized by Kumasi Soccer, where teams bore the names of competing nations and an enthusiastic announcer shouted each goal, echoing the energy of the global tournament.
The first of four scheduled watch parties took place on June 13, and a second gathering is set for June 23 to follow the Ghana‑England matchup, promising to keep the city’s enthusiasm alive throughout the competition.
