The Kaukauna High School Galloping Ghosts have made a remarkable comeback, securing a spot in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state tournament for the first time since 1954.
Their return echoes a golden era in 1953, when the same squad captured the State High School Baseball Championship, a victory that still resonates in local lore.
The 1953 Championship Team
Coached by Noel Diffatte in his inaugural year, the 1953 champions were led by pitcher William Lappen, who threw a five‑hit game to clinch the title. The roster also featured standouts such as D. Resch, T. Hilgenberg, J. Van Linn and many others whose names still appear in the town’s baseball hall of fame.
The historic achievement was highlighted in the June 10, 1953 edition of the Kaukauna Times, and the story has been revived on Lyle Hansen’s blog, rekindling community pride.
A Citywide Celebration
Mayor Joseph Bayorgeon has announced plans for a celebration to honor the members of the state championship team, a tribute that will bring together players, families and fans in the heart of Kaukauna.
The upcoming event underscores the city’s commitment to recognizing athletic excellence and preserving the legacy of the Galloping Ghosts, a team that made three appearances in the state tournament between 1951 and 1954 and won a lone title in 1953.
As the team prepares for the upcoming tournament, the community looks forward to adding another chapter to the storied legacy of Kaukauna baseball.
