A 22‑Hour Ice Marathon for a Cause
The sixth edition of "Hockey Heals 22" took place at AdventHealth Center Ice in Wesley Chapel, Florida, where veterans, first responders, local schools and community members gathered for a 22‑hour continuous hockey game. The marathon was organized by the Lightning Warriors Hockey Program in partnership with the Tampa Bay Lightning, turning the rink into a living tribute to those who have served.
The number 22, which originally highlighted the sobering statistic that 22 veterans die by suicide each day, now symbolizes a collective commitment to eliminate that loss entirely. Chris Scangarello, Executive Director of Hockey Heals 22, stressed the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and creating a safe space for veterans to seek help.
Youth from nearby schools participated by passing down a message of prevention and shared responsibility, while former Air Force veteran and hockey player Michael MacAleese recounted how the event has personally helped him navigate the challenges of transitioning to civilian life. The presence of NHL alumni such as Ryan Bugsey Malone added a layer of inspiration, reminding participants that the hockey community offers a powerful sense of belonging.
Beyond the on‑ice action, the marathon serves as a fundraiser for three partner organizations: the Lightning Warriors Hockey Program, Operation Healing Forces and the Black Dagger Military Hunt Club. Proceeds from the marathon will directly support suicide‑prevention initiatives, military‑family assistance and outreach projects that aim to strengthen the network of care for veterans.
