Gonzaga lands French prospect Juwan Ekanga-Ehawa in latest recruiting coup

The 6‑5 wing brings a blend of scoring, defense and international experience to the Bulldogs

Gonzaga University announced the commitment of 18‑year‑old French guard Juwan Ekanga-Ehawa, who averaged 19.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game in the French league last season. The move marks the sixth newcomer of the Bulldogs' offseason and adds a versatile backcourt option for head coach Mark Few.

A French connection deepens

Ekanga-Ehawa’s arrival follows a pattern of French players thriving at Gonzaga. Alumni such as Ronny Turiaf, Mathis Keita, Joel Ayayi and Killian Tillie have each left a mark on the program, and the new recruit is expected to continue that legacy. His 6‑5 frame and 6‑10 wingspan align with the Bulldogs’ preference for long, athletic wings.

The French guard’s breakout performance came on March 28, when he posted a career‑high 33 points with five assists and five rebounds. That effort earned him a spot on the preliminary roster for France’s U20 team heading into the EuroBasket tournament in Slovenia, highlighting his rising international profile.

Beyond club play, Ekanga-Ehawa has experience with JL Bourg’s U21 side and has also logged minutes with the senior team as well as with Chorale Roanne. His stint with JL Bourg’s top club and his background at San Jose State, Abilene Christian and Long Beach State have prepared him for the transition to NCAA competition.

What the Bulldogs gain

Coaches see Ekanga-Ehawa as a depth piece who can contribute immediately on both ends of the floor. His defensive instincts, highlighted by his steal rate, complement Gonzaga’s fast‑paced style, while his scoring ability adds another option in the backcourt. The French prospect will join a roster that already includes veterans and other incoming freshmen.

The addition also reinforces Gonzaga’s reputation as a destination for European talent. With a strong academic profile and a history of player development, the university continues to attract prospects who can make an impact on the national stage.
