Illinois head coach Bret Bielema announced a verbal commitment from three-star quarterback Sladen Shack, a 6-foot-1, 211-pound prospect from Brandon, Mississippi, for the 2027 recruiting class.
Shack, known for his quick release and strong arm, led his high school team to the state playoffs for two consecutive seasons and is ranked 28th among Mississippi prospects and 54th nationally among quarterbacks in his class.
A potent arm for the Fighting Illini
The commitment comes at a time when Illinois is evaluating its quarterback depth, with current starter Katin Houser set to graduate after next season, opening a competitive path for Shack to potentially claim the starting role in the fall of 2027.
Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. highlighted that Shack’s experience in a spread offense aligns well with Illinois’ scheme, though adaptation will be required as the team transitions to a more pro-style approach.
Shack chose the Fighting Illini over 22 other programs, including Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Michigan and East Carolina, underscoring the coaching staff’s ability to attract top talent to the Midwest.
The addition of Shack bolsters a recruiting class that already features other highly touted prospects, and could signal a new era of offensive development under Bielema’s leadership.
