Sebastian Aho, the 30-year-old Swedish defenseman, has agreed to a contract with Vaxjo Lakers HC of the Swedish Hockey League, bringing his North American experience back to the SHL.
A Swedish Return
Aho's NHL resume includes 190 games with the New York Islanders where he recorded 11 goals and 39 assists for a total of 50 points. Selected in the fifth round of the 2017 draft he developed his defensive skills under the Islanders' system before seeking new challenges abroad.
The past two seasons saw him in the American Hockey League with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins where he posted 14 points in each campaign showcasing a steady offensive contribution from the blue line.
His earlier SHL adventure with Skelleftea AIK demonstrated his ability to adapt to the Swedish style of play a factor that coaches believe will translate into immediate impact for Vaxjo.
The Lakers who have not lifted the championship trophy since the 2022-23 season view Aho's arrival as a pivotal piece in their quest for a title. We're excited to add a seasoned two-way player who knows how to win a club executive said in a statement.
Fans in Vaxjo are already buzzing about the prospect of seeing Aho paired with the league's emerging talent and the club's management expects his leadership to accelerate the team's chemistry as the new season approaches.
