A Boost for Michigan's Defense
Xavier Muhammad, a four-star defensive lineman from South Houston, Texas, announced his commitment to the University of Michigan on Wednesday, electing the Wolverines over several Power Four programs that had pursued him.
The recruit is ranked as the ninth-best defensive lineman nationally and holds the No. 12 spot among Texas prospects, as well as the No. 97 position overall in the country, underscoring the significance of his pledge for the program.
Muhammad arrives as a three-sport athlete, having excelled in basketball and track and field before focusing on football, a combination that Michigan coaches say adds unmatched versatility and athleticism to the defensive line.
His recruitment was not a surprise to followers of the circuit; he had been courting visits from Notre Dame, Miami (Florida), and Houston, all of which expressed strong interest before he ultimately chose Michigan.
The addition of Muhammad, alongside fellow four-star prospect Quentin Burrell, has propelled Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class to No. 21 in the national rankings, a notable rise that reflects the Wolverines’ growing momentum on the trail.
