Manny Patterson Joins Western Michigan Basketball Staff as Director of Player Development

Former Chicago Star Brings International Experience and Coaching Acumen to the Broncos

Manny Patterson arrived at Western Michigan University this June, assuming the position of Director of Player Development for the Broncos men’s basketball program. His appointment marks a strategic move as the team prepares for the upcoming 2026‑27 season.

A Global Lens for the Program

A native of Chicago, Patterson brings a blend of international playing experience and coaching acumen. After a five‑year college career that began at Green Bay and concluded at Southeast Missouri State, he pursued professional contracts in Finland, Austria, Spain and Sweden, honing a skill set that he now aims to transfer to the next generation of Broncos.

His most recent coaching stint was at Francis W. Parker High School, where over two seasons he helped shape three All‑Conference selections and guided a player to the ISL Player of the Year award. In that role he also founded the MP Skills Academy, a training platform that has become a fixture in the local basketball community.

Patterson’s professional journey has been linked closely with Western Michigan’s own coaching network. He played under Dustin Yoder during his final college season at Southeast Missouri State, a connection that now will see Yoder working alongside Patterson in Kalamazoo.

The Broncos hope that Patterson’s global perspective and developmental expertise will accelerate player growth and reinforce recruitment pipelines. His background, from Chicago’s urban courts to European professional leagues, offers a unique narrative that resonates with today’s increasingly diverse roster.

Patterson’s international résumé extends beyond the court. Having navigated different basketball cultures, he brings an understanding of varied tactical approaches that he believes will enrich Western Michigan’s system.

The university’s athletic department sees this hire as part of a broader initiative to modernize player development, aligning with the school’s commitment to academic excellence and community engagement.
