Kayleigh Carson, a senior on the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) women's basketball team, recently completed the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) highly selective "So You Want To Be A Coach" program.
A Prestigious Program
Held in Phoenix, Arizona, the two‑day workshop gathered 66 student‑athletes from across the nation, chosen for their academic excellence and proven contributions to women's basketball. The curriculum blended recruiting strategies, administrative duties, NCAA rule education, leadership development, and work‑life balance.
Participants also benefited from mentorship by established collegiate coaches and administrators, gaining insight into the day‑to‑day realities of coaching at various levels.
Carson's Impact at WPI
During her four seasons with the WPI Engineers, Carson helped the program compile 41 victories, contributing to a period of sustained success for the team.
Her teammates and coaches praised her work ethic, basketball IQ, and ability to elevate those around her, qualities that likely impressed the selection committee for the coaching program.
Looking Ahead
Now graduated, Carson is exploring pathways into coaching, hoping to translate the knowledge and connections she gained in Phoenix into a meaningful career on the sidelines.
The experience also underscores the growing pipeline of women who are moving from player roles into leadership positions, a trend the WBCA has been actively fostering since its founding in 1981.
