Vanderbilt Commodores head coach Mark Byington was presented with the 2026 Loos Award during the Coaches vs. Cancer Tennessee Tip‑Off Reception, an honor that celebrates individuals who embody drive, compassion and purpose in the battle against cancer.
The accolade, named for the late Coach Dave Loos, underscores the award’s mission to highlight those who translate personal commitment into tangible impact for cancer research and patient support.
A Personal Connection Fuels Public Advocacy
Byington’s recognition stems from a deeply personal connection to the cause: his partner, Katina Kangelaris, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer earlier this year, prompting the couple to go public with their story in hopes of encouraging early screening.
Together they have leveraged their platform to amplify awareness, sharing their journey with fans, media and community groups, and urging people to prioritize preventive examinations.
Vanderbilt’s basketball program has a longstanding partnership with the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer Tennessee, marked by annual visits to the Nashville Hope Lodge and participation in nationwide Coaches vs. Cancer initiatives each January.
The Commodores’ involvement extends beyond fundraising, as players and staff regularly engage with patients, volunteers and researchers, reinforcing a culture of service that aligns with the award’s values.
