A Tradition That Bridges Service and Sport
The 13th edition of the Veterans Classic will take place in early November, bringing together four programs that have all tasted postseason success this year. The doubleheader, streamed on CBS Sports Network, pairs Navy with Penn and USF with Saint Joseph's in a celebration that honors the nation's veterans while spotlighting the U.S. Naval Academy's storied basketball heritage.
Navy enters the event with a 26‑8 record, the best season for the Midshipmen since the 1985‑86 campaign, while Penn, the Ivy League's third‑place team, earned an automatic NCAA berth after a 9‑5 conference slate. On the other side of the bracket, USF captured the American Conference regular‑season title with a 15‑3 mark and Saint Joseph's posted a 24‑12 record that carried them to the Atlantic 10 semifinals.
The Navy‑Penn series is one of the longest-running rivalries in college basketball, meeting 86 times with Penn holding a 59‑27 edge. Their histories intertwine with countless moments that have defined the classic, and this year's matchup promises to add another chapter to a saga that began decades ago.
Both USF and Saint Joseph's have shown they can compete with the nation's elite, each having advanced to the NCAA Tournament and the Atlantic 10 semifinals respectively in the same season. Their presence underscores the classic's reputation for showcasing teams that not only excel on the court but also embody the spirit of competition and community service.
Over the years, the Veterans Classic has featured powerhouses such as Michigan State, North Carolina and Houston, and 15 teams from the event have gone on to the NCAA Tournament in the same year. In total, 42 alumni have reached the NBA, with six claiming championship rings, a testament to the platform's role in launching careers.
Looking Forward
As the teams prepare to take the court, the event also serves as a reminder of the broader mission of the U.S. Naval Academy: to develop leaders who serve the country with distinction. Jon Perry, Fran McCaffery, Chris Mack and Steve Donahue, among others, will be watching closely as the next generation of players carries forward that legacy.
