Courtroom verdict
A court in Valencia has handed down a hefty sentence to former Valencia CF striker Rafa Mir, convicting him of sexual assault and physical harm. The judgment, which spans eight and a half years, reflects the severity of the crimes committed against two women in 2024.
According to the ruling, the assaults occurred at Mir's home in the city, where he was residing while playing for Valencia CF. The victims alleged that they were attacked after a gathering, while Mir maintained that any sexual relations had been consensual.
Mir, who is 28 years old, spent the previous season on loan at Elche from Sevilla and was still under contract with the club until the end of the month. His future in professional football now hangs in the balance as the legal process continues.
The court sentenced him to seven years for the sexual assault charge and an additional 18 months for causing physical injury, bringing the total term to eight and a half years. The decision also imposed a separate two‑and‑a‑half‑year sentence on his teammate Pablo J. G., a lower‑division player, for his role in the same incidents.
Both men have indicated they will appeal the verdict, a move that could delay the enforcement of the sentences while higher courts review the case. The ruling underscores the growing scrutiny of athlete conduct off the pitch.
