The Ole Miss Rebels entered the Omaha ballpark with a chance to rewrite their season, but a 12-8 loss to Troy left their College World Series dreams in tatters.
An early surge had put them ahead 6-2 in the fourth inning, only for a series of questionable calls and a sudden shift in pitching strategy to swing momentum.
The pivotal fifth inning
A balk call that many deemed dubious unsettled starter Hunter Elliott, prompting the coaching staff to summon Walker Hooks earlier than planned. Hooks, who had previously surrendered three earned runs against the University of North Carolina, walked the first batter and surrendered a two-run double that instantly narrowed the gap.
His command faltered; the changeup that had been a reliable weapon all season deserted him, leading to a cascade of hits. After three earned runs slipped across the plate, the Rebels’ bullpen, already taxed from a grueling Super Regional, could not contain the surge.
A season of promise
Will Furniss managed to cut the deficit with a solo homer, but the damage was done. The Rebels allowed three more runs after Hooks was pulled, extending Troy’s lead beyond reach.
Coach’s reflection
Coach Mike Bianco, ever pragmatic, summed up the sentiment: “This is the place you want to lose,” acknowledging the sting of elimination while reflecting on a season that had exceeded expectations.
Though the loss ended their championship bid, the Rebels finished the year with a celebrated campaign, having navigated a demanding schedule and earned a spot in the sport’s premier event.
