Kim Weiss Appointed Head Coach of Inaugural PWHL Las Vegas Team

Former Colorado Eagles assistant brings extensive coaching experience to the new women's hockey franchise

Kim Weiss has been named the first head coach of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) Las Vegas team for the 2026‑27 season, a milestone that underscores the league’s commitment to building a competitive and culturally rich franchise in a new market.

A Coaching Journey Spanning Levels

Weiss arrives after a series of high‑profile coaching roles, most recently as an assistant with the Colorado Eagles, the AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. In that capacity she became only the second woman in AHL/NHL history to hold a full‑time assistant coaching position, a breakthrough that highlighted her tactical acumen and leadership.

Her coaching résumé also includes a season as an assistant with Trinity College’s men’s hockey program during the 2023‑24 campaign, where she helped shape the development of young collegiate players. Prior to that, she served as director of player development and head coach of the Washington Pride girls’ AAA program, further cementing her reputation as a builder of talent at the grassroots level.

Weiss has been an integral part of USA Hockey’s player development and coaching education initiatives, contributing to the growth of the sport across the United States. Her work with the U.S. Women’s National Team and participation in the NHL Coaches Association Female Coaches Program have equipped her with a deep understanding of both elite and developmental hockey environments.

Speaking about her new role, Weiss emphasized the importance of culture and cohesion: “I’m excited to build a competitive, cohesive unit that reflects the passion of our fans and the talent of our players.” Her vision centers on creating a strong team identity that can thrive from the outset.

The Las Vegas franchise will debut in the 2026‑27 season under Weiss’s guidance, marking a significant moment for women’s professional hockey and for the city’s sports landscape.
