Darren Sawatzky has been appointed as the inaugural head coach of Sporting Cascades FC, the newest professional soccer franchise set to compete in the USL League One beginning next March.
Sawatzky’s deep connections to the Pacific Northwest date back to his collegiate years at the University of Portland, where he also played before embarking on a coaching career that includes stints with the Richmond Kickers, the Seattle Sounders youth academy and the Guam men’s national team.
A Coach With a Proven Track Record
During his tenure at the Richmond Kickers, Sawatzky led the side to a regular‑season championship in 2022 and earned Coach of the Year honors, while guiding the club to top‑ranked attendance figures in both 2023 and 2024.
His experience in USL League One extends beyond playing days, having overseen player development and first‑team operations that consistently produced competitive results.
Vision for Growth in Eugene‑Springfield
Club owner Bill Cornog emphasized that on‑field success and sound business practices are intertwined, noting that Sawatzky’s regional insight will help the franchise cultivate a loyal fanbase across the Eugene‑Springfield corridor.
The organization also highlighted its partnership with local institutions, including the University of Portland, to nurture talent and engage the community.
Dave Galas and John Galas, key figures in the club’s ownership group, echoed the sentiment, stating that Sawatzky’s appointment marks a pivotal step toward establishing Sporting Cascades FC as a cornerstone of regional soccer.
