A championship to remember
On June 13, St. Rita High School lifted the Illinois Class 3A baseball trophy after a contest that swung back and forth under stormy skies. The victory ended a streak of three consecutive state‑championship defeats for the school, igniting a celebration among players, coaches and fans.
The game opened with Vinny Stubitsch delivering a two‑run homer in the first inning, giving St. Rita an early edge. The momentum shifted when catcher Colin Quinn snagged a foul ball that initially appeared to seal the win, only for Triad to rally.
Triad’s Carter Gaskill answered with a three‑run home run that tied the score, forcing the contest into a tense finish. With the game on the line, JJ Quinlan served as the pinch runner for St. Rita, positioning the team for a final decisive play.
In the closing moments, Gaskill caught another foul ball that ended the game, preserving the championship for St. Rita. The play capped a roller‑coaster contest marked by two weather‑related delays and a crowd‑pleasing finish.
St. Rita’s triumph was celebrated by the school community and highlighted by the athletes who contributed throughout the season. Their perseverance paid off in a manner that will be remembered for years.
