Nebraska Baseball reshapes its roster ahead of summer deadline

Transfer portal moves highlight rebuilding efforts as portal window nears closure

Portal Activity Shapes the 2026 Squad

The transfer portal remains open through the end of June, and Nebraska Baseball has turned the deadline into a focal point of its offseason strategy. With the window set to close on June 30, the Huskers are finalizing a roster that blends experienced returnees with a wave of newcomers.

The program has been on a steady climb, earning NCAA Tournament berths in three straight seasons. That success has attracted a number of players seeking a fresh start, while also prompting departures as the coaching staff reshapes the squad.

Outgoing Talent Leaves a Mark

Infielder Nico Newhan, who transferred in from Grossmont College, will move on after two seasons of eligibility remain elsewhere. He contributed a solid .285 average last year and showed versatility across the infield. Outfielder Max Buettenback, a Lincoln native, capped his Nebraska career with a .255 average, 12 home runs and 40 RBI, and will now finish his collegiate journey at another institution. Right‑hander Cooper Katskee, a Miami (Ohio) transfer, posted a 5.71 ERA and two saves in his lone season in Lincoln.

Pitcher Cole Moore, fresh from Iowa, appeared in 20 games and logged a 4.68 ERA as a freshman. He joins a pitching staff that also welcomes Blake Encarnacion, who missed the 2026 campaign due to Tommy John surgery but was a standout freshman in 2025.

Utility player Carter Kutz, who did not see game action this past year, retains four years of eligibility and could see increased role in the field. Another arm, Blake Sebastian, redshirted his previous season and entered the program as a top prospect highlighted by Perfect Game.

Incoming Bats and Arms

The incoming class also brings bats and gloves from junior colleges and other conferences. Caleb Hoover from South Carolina posted a .340 average with 16 homers at Grayson College, while Reese Moore, also from South Carolina, posted a .982 OPS and 16 doubles during an All‑Big Ten season at Iowa. Right‑hander Zach Bates from Illinois earned third‑team All‑Big Ten honors and impressed in the Cape Cod League over the summer.

These moves reflect a broader strategy: blend proven performers with high‑upside transfers to maintain competitiveness while the portal remains active.
