Gene Stephenson, the longtime architect of Wichita State’s baseball program, has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Wayne Graham Award for Teaching Excellence, a honor that underscores his dual commitment to on‑field success and personal development.
A Career Defined by Excellence
Over three decades, Stephenson guided the Shockers to a 1989 College World Series championship and accumulated a résumé that includes three NCAA Coach of the Year accolades and eleven Missouri Valley Conference titles. His teams produced 33 major‑league players, a testament to his ability to nurture talent.
The Wayne Graham Award
Established by the College Baseball Foundation, the award recognizes coaches who excel in teaching and shaping young athletes for life beyond the diamond. A panel of coaches, players, umpires and administrators votes annually, ensuring that the recognition reflects a broad consensus within the baseball community.
The award will be presented at the future College Baseball Hall of Fame in Overland Park, Kansas, where Stephenson will join a distinguished list of recipients.
Mentorship and Legacy
Beyond trophies, Stephenson’s influence is measured in the lives of his former players, many of whom credit him with instilling discipline and confidence that carried them into professional careers and community leadership.
The award’s namesake, Wayne Graham, was himself a Hall of Fame coach at Rice University and passed away in September 2024, leaving a legacy of integrity and mentorship that Stephenson now continues.
