Bobby Labonte to Race at Thunder Road Speedbowl in July

The 2000 NASCAR champion headlines a July 9 event featuring Late Models and Flying Tigers

A Legend Returns to the Track

Bobby Labonte, the 2000 NASCAR Cup Series Champion and member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, will return to competitive racing at Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, Vermont on July 9. The appearance marks a rare outing for the veteran driver, who last ran full‑time in the Cup Series in 2013.

The July 9 program will feature 100‑lap races for both Late Models and Flying Tigers, with a special Twin‑100 format added to the schedule. The Late Model field will also include a showdown against Labonte on the high‑banked Barre track.

Labonte’s career spans decades of American motorsport excellence. He captured the 1991 O’Reilly Series championship, won the 2000 Winston Cup title driving the Interstate Batteries #18, and added an IROC Series victory in 2001. After stepping back from full‑time competition, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2020.

Since retiring from full‑time racing, Labonte has remained visible in the sport as a Fox Sports analyst and as a driver development coach with Joe Gibbs Racing. He continues to pilot Tour‑type Modifieds in the SMART Tour and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, keeping his hands on the wheel.

The event will also include a Father’s Day weekend doubleheader, adding a festive atmosphere to the on‑track action. Fans can expect a blend of nostalgia and fresh competition as the veteran driver takes on new challenges.

Excitement at Thunder Road

Cris Michaud, managing partner of Thunder Road, expressed enthusiasm about hosting Labonte, noting that the driver’s presence elevates the venue’s profile and offers a unique experience for the local racing community.

The 2nd annual Tiger $2K will award $2,000 to the winner of the Flying Tiger division, underscoring the event’s commitment to rewarding emerging talent alongside seasoned veterans.
