Alex Weiermair, a forward for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League, has been named the CHL Scholastic Player of the Year for 2026, an honor that recognizes the league’s top student‑athlete.
At 21, the Los Angeles native not only posted a 4.0 grade point average but also excelled in a demanding curriculum that included chemistry, business, history, psychology, advanced calculus and physics, while also picking up German and teaching himself Italian.
On the ice, Weiermair was an offensive engine, recording 93 points — 37 goals and 56 assists — in 66 regular‑season games, leading his team in scoring and finishing fifth across the entire WHL.
His sportsmanship earned him a nomination for the Brad Hornung Memorial Trophy, the award that celebrates the WHL’s most sportsmanlike player, underscoring his reputation for maturity, humility and leadership.
A rare blend of brains and brawn
The accolade was presented at the 2026 CHL Awards ceremony in downtown Toronto on June 15, where the finalists for each CHL honor were selected by the winners of the league‑specific trophies from the WHL, the Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.
