A Quarter‑Century of Dreams
Foday Turay arrived in Philadelphia from West Africa more than two decades ago, carrying with him a passion for the beautiful game and a vision that would soon take root in the city's diverse neighborhoods.
In 1999 he founded Salone FC, a youth soccer club named for his homeland, Sierra Leone. The organization has since introduced the sport to hundreds of children, many of whom travel from across the globe to train under Turay's guidance.
This year the club celebrates its 25th anniversary, a milestone that coincides with Philadelphia's hosting of the FIFA World Cup. Turay and his teammates played an active role in bringing the tournament to the city, turning a long‑held dream into a tangible reality.
The celebration reached a symbolic peak when members of the squad viewed the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy at the University of Pennsylvania's historic Palestra arena, underscoring the deep connections between local grassroots programs and global sport.
Beyond the field, Turay's work reflects a broader narrative of diaspora empowerment, as he blends cultural heritage with community building, offering a pathway for young athletes to pursue both athletic and personal growth.
