From Sierra Leone to Philadelphia: A Coach’s 25‑Year Quest
When Foday Turay first set foot in Philadelphia two decades and a half ago, he carried more than a suitcase; he brought the rhythm of West African soccer and a vision that would soon take root in the city’s youth. After a successful playing career across the region, Turay settled in the City of Brotherly Love, where he saw an untapped need for structured youth sport and seized the opportunity.
In 2001 he founded Salone FC, a club named for his native Sierra Leone, and began teaching the sport to children who otherwise might never have stepped onto a pitch. Over the years the program has guided hundreds of youngsters, many of whom credit the club with shaping their discipline, teamwork and future ambitions. The modest fields of West Philadelphia have become a crucible where Turay’s mentorship translates into life lessons that extend far beyond the game.
Celebrating a Milestone and a Global Dream
This year the organization marks its 25th anniversary, a milestone that coincides with Philadelphia’s historic hosting of the FIFA World Cup. Turay, who helped shepherd the tournament to the city’s streets, says the celebration is as much about honoring the community that raised the club as it is about the global stage. The anniversary events weave together stories of players who have progressed from neighborhood games to college scholarships and professional trials.
