A Legacy in the Making
Damin Lopez announced his resignation as head coach of the boys basketball program at Phoenix St. Mary's High School, ending a nine‑year tenure that produced two state championships.
In a letter published by The Arizona Republic, Lopez reflected on his time at the school and said he is moving on to a new challenge, a decision that follows the Knights’ recent appearance in a national showcase where they finished 1‑3.
The program has been a talent pipeline, having sent 7‑foot prospect Cameron Williams to Duke and developing guards Mick Riordan and Carter Bagley, while also welcoming Martray Bagley, a 6‑foot‑5 wing who transferred from Glendale Dream City.
Looking Forward
Lopez, who also served as an assistant under his brother Dave Lopez, who led the school to titles in 2001 and 2009, was recognized as both Arizona Coach of the Year and Player of the Year, an honor previously shared with former Phoenix Shadow Mountain star Mike Bibby.
Although the specifics of his next role remain private, Lopez said he is eager to embrace the next challenge, leaving a program that consistently competes at the highest level in Arizona.
The school will now begin the search for a successor, hoping to build on a foundation that includes state titles, a runner‑up finish in the Open Division and a steady stream of Division I prospects.
