A Legacy Reunites with the Bluejays
Creighton Baseball has named John Hendry its newest assistant coach, a move that blends family tradition with fresh strategic insight. The announcement came as the program looks to build on recent momentum heading into the 2026 season.
Hendry follows a path already paved by his father, Jim Hendry, who guided the Bluejays to the 1991 College World Series and later steered the Chicago Cubs as general manager. The younger Hendry’s connection to Creighton runs deep, having grown up watching the team’s storied runs from the stands.
Before joining Creighton, Hendry honed his coaching craft at South Carolina and spent three seasons as Director of Player Development at the University of Virginia, where he helped the Cavaliers to back‑to‑back College World Series appearances in 2023 and 2024. His playing career at the University of Indianapolis, where he earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Sport Management, culminated in a 32nd‑round selection by the Colorado Rockies in the 2016 MLB Draft.
Hendry replaces Will McGillis, who departed for a hitting‑coach role at Lamar after Creighton’s 2026 season. In his new position, he will work closely with head coach Mark Kingston and the rest of the staff to shape player development and scouting strategies.
The hiring underscores Creighton’s commitment to leveraging internal expertise while expanding its network of experienced baseball minds. Hendry’s blend of playing experience, administrative acumen, and familial ties positions him as a key contributor to the program’s continued growth.
