Council Approves Purchase of Former School Site
The Follansbee City Council has voted to purchase a former football field located behind the Blue Wave Center for $125,000. The parcel, once part of Follansbee Middle School, was sold in 2020 by Brooke County Schools to local businessman Scott Ewusiak. Council members say the acquisition will help establish clearer boundaries with the adjacent Follansbee Park and open the door to expanded recreational offerings for residents.
Plans for the site include converting a portion of the land into pickleball courts and providing dedicated parking for the New Day Christian Center. Officials hope the move will enhance community access to sports facilities while preserving the natural buffer between the park and the school grounds.
Financial pathways for the purchase may involve municipal bonds or a lease‑to‑purchase arrangement, giving the council flexibility in how the transaction is funded. The decision reflects a broader strategy to invest in local infrastructure without imposing immediate tax increases.
Personnel Changes Within City Leadership
Wendy DeAngelis was appointed interim city clerk, a role she will hold until June 30, 2027. Her appointment will appear on the ballot in the 2027 municipal election, giving voters the chance to confirm her candidacy for a full term. In a separate action, the council approved advertising the hiring of a new police officer at a rate of $24 per hour, aiming to bolster public safety staffing.
The moves underscore a period of transition for Follansbee, as the city balances recreational development with administrative stability. Community leaders say the initiatives will foster a more vibrant public space while ensuring competent governance and effective law enforcement.
