Beloved Baseball Coach Jorge Fonseca Killed in Birmingham Shooting

Community Mourns Mentor Who Guided Young Players

The Birmingham baseball community is reeling from the loss of Jorge Fonseca, a 34‑year‑old coach who was gunned down outside a local barbershop on June 13.

According to police, Fonseca was inside the shop with his family when an argument erupted, leading to a shooter opening fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators later arrested a suspect at a nearby location.

Fonseca had been scheduled to travel the following day to Panama City, Florida, for a travel‑baseball world series tournament, a trip that would have taken him and his team across the state line.

A friendship forged on the diamond

Tony Whetstone, a fellow coach and longtime friend, recalls meeting Fonseca at a Homewood batting cage in 2022. The two quickly bonded over their shared passion for mentoring young players, eventually teaming up to run the Wow Factor 205 nonprofit.

Whetstone describes Fonseca as a coach who never shied away from the kids others overlooked, often arriving early and staying late to provide guidance both on and off the field.

The youngsters he coached, many between the ages of seven and nine, affectionately called him “Coach George” and looked to him as a second father, a role he embraced with quiet dignity.

Remembering a mentor

In the wake of the tragedy, Whetstone is organizing a tribute event to celebrate Fonseca’s life and legacy. Details of the gathering are still being finalized, but the ceremony is expected to bring together players, families, and fellow coaches.

The incident has also sparked renewed conversations about safety for youth sports figures, with local officials pledging to review security measures at venues where coaches and families congregate.
