Matthew Smith, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound quarterback from Santa Margarita Catholic School in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, announced his commitment to Vanderbilt on Tuesday, becoming the first signal-caller to pledge for the 2027 class. Rivals lists him as the No. 122 quarterback nationally and ranks him 1,745th overall among the 2027 recruits.
His decision came after a whirlwind recruitment that also featured a flip by five-star prospect Jared Curtis, who switched his commitment from Georgia to the Commodores in December. Smith described his game as a blend of a strong arm, accuracy on deep throws, and the ability to escape the pocket and extend plays with his legs.
The commitment arrives at a pivotal moment for Vanderbilt, which is transitioning away from the Diego Pavia era and seeking to establish a more balanced offensive identity. Coach Clark Lea emphasized that adding a quarterback with Smith’s mix of arm strength and mobility will help diversify the playbook and keep the team competitive in the SEC.
Recruiting analysts from Rivals and 247Sports have highlighted Smith’s ability to deliver quick throws into tight windows and to make accurate downfield throws of 40 yards or more.
