A sudden reshaping of the Bruins' outfield
Payton Brennan, a redshirt junior outfielder who had been a mainstay in UCLA’s lineup, announced his entry into the transfer portal this week, becoming the third player to depart the program within a single month.
During the 2026 campaign Brennan started every one of the Bruins’ 58 games in the outfield, finishing the season with a .290 batting average, 51 runs batted in, 48 scored runs and nine home runs. His 63 hits placed him sixth on the team while his 11 doubles ranked fourth, underscoring his consistent contact hitting.
Brennan’s defensive reliability was equally notable; over the past two seasons he recorded 219 putouts with only four errors, posting a fielding percentage of .991 in 2025 and .973 in 2026, figures that helped anchor the outfield.
His collegiate résumé stretches back three years, encompassing 144 games played and 138 starts, a span that includes a standout performance at the 2025 Los Angeles Regional where he earned All‑Tournament honors after compiling eight hits in 13 at‑bats across three games.
The momentum carried into the subsequent super regional, where Brennan logged four hits in nine at‑bats, continuing to demonstrate his ability to perform under pressure.
The departure coincides with the exit of fellow outfielder Will Gasparino, who also entered the transfer portal before being selected in the MLB Draft, leaving the Bruins with two vacant spots in the outfield that will need to be filled before the start of the next season.
Coaching staff have indicated that the openings could be addressed by either redshirt sophomore Aidan Espinoza or transfer center fielder Isaac Waschmann, both of whom are expected to compete for increased playing time.
Brennan now has until the end of June to finalize his commitment to a new program, a timeline that adds urgency to the ongoing reshaping of the roster.
UCLA, a storied collegiate program under longtime coach John Savage, continues to navigate a wave of transfers and draft entries, with three players having left the program this month alone.
The moves reflect a broader trend across college baseball, where the transfer portal and draft eligibility have become pivotal factors in roster construction each offseason.
