A 46‑year‑old man was killed on Tuesday afternoon after being struck with a baseball bat near a smoke shop in the southeastern part of Albuquerque.
The victim, identified as Dwayne Burwell, was rushed to a hospital with severe head injuries before succumbing to his wounds.
Homicide Investigation Launched
Albuquerque Police Department detectives have opened a homicide investigation, canvassing the area around the Smoke Depot at 116 San Pedro SE and interviewing witnesses.
Gilbert Gallegos, a department spokesperson, said the inquiry is still active and that investigators are working to determine a motive.
The incident has drawn attention from local residents, who expressed shock that such violence could occur near a neighborhood storefront.
