Scottish Premiership clubs join breastfeeding‑friendly initiative

Partick Thistle and St Mirren pledge support as part of a national scheme backed by government and health boards

Football clubs champion breastfeeding-friendly spaces

Two of Scotland’s Premiership sides, Partick Thistle and St Mirren, have recently become part of the nation’s Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme, a programme designed to make public venues more welcoming for mothers who nurse their babies.

The initiative, championed by the Scottish Government and delivered through NHS boards, asks participating locations to display a recognisable logo that signals breastfeeding is welcomed and to provide staff with training on how to support mothers comfortably.

Anthony Docherty, who manages Firhill Stadium, the home ground of Partick Thistle, said the club’s involvement reflects a broader commitment to family‑friendly environments, adding that the stadium’s staff have been equipped with the skills to make visits smoother for breastfeeding families.

Mark Wilson, a football manager, and Alannah McPherson, head of medical services, both echoed the sentiment, while player Alex Samuel also voiced his support, highlighting the importance of normalising public breastfeeding.

Annette Dougan, a health improvement practitioner with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, praised the clubs for adopting a progressive stance, noting that their actions set a positive example for other organisations.

Lynsey McLean, general manager at St Mirren, reinforced the club’s dedication to being family‑friendly, stating that the partnership aligns with the club’s broader community goals.

Dr John O’Dowd, interim director of public health at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, highlighted that the clubs are leading the way in creating environments where women feel confident and comfortable breastfeeding in public.

The scheme now counts more than 350 organisations across Glasgow City and Renfrewshire, illustrating a growing network of venues that prioritise the needs of breastfeeding families and help shift societal attitudes toward greater acceptance.
